Information for guidance counsellors on the European and international dimension in Guidance. Flemish projects on guidance developed under European programmes

This project aims to develop an innovative synergy between the youngster, training and the labour market so that the transition between education and the labour market can proceed more easily.

This project wishes to implement methodologies, tools and good practices from abroad. Our goal is on the one hand to develop relational skills with young people in consultation with the tutors in the workplace and on the other hand that youngsters develop skills, confidence and responsibility in order to keep their job. We will implement this through the theme of 'motivation'.

Career Learning as a success factor for lifelong learning

Nowadays society demands people to be capable of self-directing their professional and personal lives. Everyone has to make choices, has to handle changes, has to deal with uncertainty. Most people cannot do this by nature, they have to learn it. The lifelong learning (LLL) policy of the EU is a way to stimulate and facilitate citizens to enlarge their capability of self-directing their career. This policy will be more effective if young people are involved from the start. The best place to learn this is in school when pupils/students have to make choices with regard to further education and career. However, Dutch research shows that the current way in which this is organized in schools is not very effective.

A promising approach is guiding pupils in a dialogic way at their development of a work-identity: the concept of career-learning. Therefore, this project starts from the hypothesis that career-learning is a success factor for LLL. The project will produce new work methods, supportive instruments and materials, specifications and outlines for teacher training and finally a strategy on how to implement this.

OMIG: Developing methods to work with intercultural sensitivities

This project especially pays attention to the drop out rate, and the continuous rise of it, of migrant youngsters in comparison to the drop out rate of the autochthonous youngsters. As a result the chances for a sustainable employment diminish for the first mentioned group. The project aim is to deal with this drop out rate through the development of innovative methods, thus creating a more sensitive and sensible approach towards the target group.

These methodologies are meant for the service providers, teachers, guidance counsellors and all those who support these adolescents within the education sector. We will try to prevent the drop out rate and the wrongly oriented drop out rate through a better guidance and orientation, thus facilitating the transition education/ labour market.

The main objective of the project is to develop, for the need of primary education, a pedagogical teaching strategy or learning package. This should help to prepare and even realise a non-contaminated, non-prejudiced and well-prepared chioce of studies.

The European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education

The European Agency for Development of Special needs Education is independent and self-governing and was established by our member countries to act as their platform for collaboration in the field of special needs education. We are maintained by the Ministries of Education in the participating countries (member states of the European Union as well ass Iceland, Norway and Switserland) and are supported by the European Commission and the European Parliament. We facilitate transfer of accurate and reliable information and offer our member countries a unique opportunity to learn from each other by drawing upon our ability to provide different types of real-time and virtual opportunities for exchanging knowledge and experience.

The main objective of the project is to enhance the knowledge and attitudes of the actors within a VET system in order to enhance the transfer of young people to the labour market. The further development, testing and implementation of common tools could provide more common guidelines in the VET field and the cooperation between education, VET institutions and the labour market. The project will aim at a closer link with the working life and will try to identify the need and possibilities for highly qualified teachers, mentors and trainers, who undertake continuous professional development.

Through Flemisch and transnational development partnerships, the EQUAL-project Janus aims at developing, testing and integrating methods and tools into the Flemish policy that help co-operative partnerships of secondary schools and companies or services to develop a full and efficient form of alternating and/or workplace learning for students who choose for this concept of education, thereby removing obstacles that block this transition.
